Teachers of UDGVirtual members served as judges in FAO journalism competition
Recognizing journalists who have contributed to fostering reflection in public opinion on the right to food is the objective of the journalism contest “The Power of Stories”, organized by the Latin America and Caribbean office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
In the 2021 edition of this contest –whose winners were announced on March 9–, the jury included teacher Nancy Wendy Aceves Velázquez, coordinator of the bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Digital Journalism; teacher Brenda Ramos Villaseñor, head of the Center for Training in Digital Journalism de UDGVirtual, and Dr. Marco Tulio Flores Mayorga, professor of the degree in Digital Journalism.
In addition to the female teachers and the male teacher of UDGThe virtual jury was also made up of journalists from Peru, Chile and Argentina, who determined the winners of the contest.
“Journalism is key in the fight against hunger and is a crucial tool for raising awareness of issues such as malnutrition, food waste, and access to food. Through these competitions, it is possible to learn about stories produced by journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean that encourage reflection on the right to food,” said Aceves Velázquez.
Anne De Lannoy, Senior Communications Officer, reported that more than 160 entries were received across the four categories of the competition. In the Print Media category, the winner was Chilean journalist Nicolás Massai D., with his report “19 Schoolchildren Showing Signs of Malnutrition: The Stories from Schools Where Cases Have Increased,” published on the website of the CIPER Foundation (Center for Investigative Journalism).
In the Radio category, the Salvadoran journalist, Norma Arely Ramírez Bernal, won with her report "Ensuring healthy food in times of COVID-19: the experience of the Santa Marta community", published by the Association of Participatory Broadcasting of El Salvador (ARPAS).
Meanwhile, in the Television category, the winner was Colombian journalist Alejandra Ortiz, who presented the work "Childhood in Colombia during the pandemic", a report published in the media outlet El Espectador.
The winners will be awarded scholarships for online courses at the Austral University of Argentina, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the Universidad de Guadalajara from Mexico, through the Center for Training in Digital Journalism of UDGVirtual, and the Universidad de Lima Peru.
